A Little Inspiration...

On Saturday Lance and I went to check out the Inniswood Metro Gardens, one of wonderful metro parks that Columbus has to offer. As we entered the garden, we were pleasantly greeted by magnificent yellow dahlias that were the size of an 8" dinnerplate! They are called Kelvin Floodlight Dahlias. I instantly fell in love!

Busy Bees!

Lance and I have been very busy for the last few months working on our new body of collaborative work. We both are struggling with the dilemma that many studio artists are faced with - how to keep making work and pursue a career as a studio artist while working 30 - 40 hours a week. It is not easy. Fortunately, I am stubborn.

We are working on a system that utilizes our interests and strengths. Lance throws the objects, which gives him a chance to play around with ideas pertaining to form and function. Once they are leatherhard, I take over and carve into the surface. I am able to play around with texture, pattern and composition on each piece. The forms that he throws are much different from my own, so I love the few moments before I begin to carve where I get to know each piece a little bit.

The results are not only successful, but they are incredibly inspiring. We are both very excited to keep going and are looking forward to sharing the work with the world! Here is a sneak peek of what some greenware looks like.

What I've been up to..

I just spent the summer in Pennsylvania, where I taught ceramics classes at Main Line Art Center in Haverford, Pa.
I don't have enough good things to say about it, really. Great co-workers, great students and great artwork. Each week ended with an art exhibition that we put together for the kids and parents!

Before I left for Pa, I helped start up an artist collective called ARTillery Ohio. We took over a retail store front and turned it into a gallery/retail space and called it The Shoe Box. We have exhibited work from several local artists, both established and emerging. We have also participated in many art related community events in Columbus and started our own Art Markets.

Now I'm back in Columbus, Ohio getting ready to start teaching some classes. I'm proud to say that I am a part of the new Columbus Artmobile!
Artmobile was started by ARTillery member Heather Wirth. I will be teaching children's classes on Tuesdays starting Sept 7th. Classes will be held at the Shoe Box space in the South Campus Gateway.

I will also be teaching children's and adult ceramics classes at the beautiful new McConnell Arts Center in Worthington, Ohio. This building is fantastic, but my ceramics room is too clean!! My classes will be starting Wednesday Sept 8th, and I can't wait to mess the place up a bit. (In a good way of course!)

I was given the 2009 Emerging Artist Scholarship from the Ohio Craft Museum to participate in Winterfair, which is a three day long fine art and craft show.

I have been working hard on some new designs and can't wait for the show!

The show is Friday Dec 4th, 10am-8pm Saturday Dec 5th 10am-8pm and
Sunday Dec 6th 12pm-5pm.

My work will be located in booth #1008

Jewelry Sale!

This is what my table looked like at the Art for the Cash Poor show. Overall the event was a lot of fun, with a pretty good turn out. Live music, art, food, people, Philly.. i'm happy.

I was excited for this show because it was the first time I put my new porcelain pendants out for people to see. They got a good amount of attention and I even sold a few!
That's my Mom sitting behind the table in this photo. She comes with me every year to help out! Thanks Mom!!

I have been really busy making my new line of jewelry to sell at this year's Art For the Cash Poor in Philly. The show is this weekend on Sat 13th and Sun 14th. This will be my 3rd year participating and I can't wait!

Cups and Cabs..

Here are some sneak peeks at the new work I've been making.
I have about 30 new carved cabachons that are bisqued and ready for glaze. Once they are glazed I'll be setting them in sterling silver bezels. I just ordered more silver sheet today!

These mugs are handbuilt(thats new for me) and the small cups are thrown. Both have slip trailed designs that are explorations of lace patterns. Right now I am really interested in what happens when the lace patterns I am trying to learn through shuttle tatting are translated into surface designs on clay. Its a lot of fun and a nice change from the tedium of lacemaking! I'll be posting some new images of my latest attempts at lacemaking soon.

S.T.U.D.I.O!!!

Here it is! The "DiningStudio."

Last week we bought a wheel, by the end of the week we had a studio in the dining room!

I have an amazingly talented boyfriend who built us these work tables, a wedging table and peg-board wall units. We don't have much space, but we made the most of what we have. Now we are ready to get it all dirty!

A long time in the works...

This line of jewelry has been floating around in my brain for a few years now. I finally got it out of my brain and into reality. They are carved porcelain (each one done by hand) which I bezel set in sterling silver. The"Barnacle" pendant and ring were the very first prototypes.

I have been working on new designs that are influenced by my study of intricate lace patterns. For now the pieces are various shades of white, but I have been doing some glaze testing to find a surface and color palate that I am happy with.

As my metalsmithing skills improve, I'd like to work on the relationships between the surface of the porcelain and the surface of the metal.

Artist Statement..

There's less than two weeks until the installation of my thesis show!
This is my artist statement that will go along with the work..

Throughout the course of my day I search for subtle details that can easily go unnoticed. The kinds of quiet details that capture the absence of an activity, a watermark left on the coffee table by a glass, imprints made by the soles of a shoe in mud, lace that is created by bugs chewing on leaves. These are small things that seem to get lost in the shuffle of daily life. I notice the negative space between stacks of clay slabs as they are stored on a shelf in my studio, the dense pattern created by overlapping circles in a pile of tiny lace panels sitting on my table, and how the translucency of the yarn creates a gradation of color when different sized crochet hooks are used.

This body of work attempts to remain ambiguous while triggering something familiar and vaguely domestic, a stack of dishes, a towel hanging on a hook, the curved shape of a faucet, quiet details from one’s own life.

Cocoons

This is a little installation I did in one of the hallway cases at school using curicula cocoons. These cocoons produce a silk that is the same amazing golden yellow color.
I'd like to learn the process that turns them into silk. From what I hear it smells pretty bad..
